Sandibe Okavango Safari Lodge

Southeastern border of the Moremi Wildlife Reserve.

Sandibe Okavango Safari Lodge is built within a forested area of the Okavango Delta, next to a permanent waterway, the Santantadibe River (from where the lodge gets its name) - a deep, wide channel leading to several beautiful lagoons. Sandibe is populated by an abundant array of wildlife throughout the year.

All the lodge's 12 spacious, airy terracotta rooms face the river, each with en suite facilities and a refreshing open-air shower. The cottages are built under a canopy of trees and have a raised private deck giving broad vistas of the surrounding area. Decorated in neutral tones, the spacious cottage-style rooms are of stone construction and have large gauze windows. Outside each chalet is a polished concrete veranda with chairs, a table, and a raised viewing platform for watching the wildlife. Built with a commitment to 'treading lightly on the earth', Sandibe's architecture evokes the earthy, organic, living forest. No trees were sacrificed in the building of the lodge instead cottages were built in a natural clearing.

Sandibe's towering double-storey main lodge is a superb structure. On one side of the ground floor is a lounge area and a well-stocked bar; on the other is a covered dining area. The whole lodge is dotted with beautiful pieces of African art and traditional reed baskets, some of which were made by the lodge's staff. On the first floor, guests can enjoy comfortable chairs and sofas and a better view of the colony of epauletted fruit bats that have made the rafters of the lodge their home. The small splash pool is built into a raised deck near the main lodge, with sunny and shaded areas and sun loungers.

Activities

Activities at Sandibe include day and night 4x4 game drives, mokoro excursions and bush walks. Guests can enjoy boating trips in a specially designed 'silent' electric boat which takes them along the permanent waterways. Interpretive bush walks are in the care of a local San (Bushman) guide; this is a rare opportunity to learn traditional bush skills like making rope from the indigenous grasses, constructing traps, lighting fires using friction sticks and tracking animals.

Why we like Sandibe Okavango Safari Lodge

Sandibe's shaded decks with hammocks offer glorious wetland and savanna views, and guests will enjoy the delicious Pan-African cuisine in the boma. The lodge is ideally located in a forest setting with excellent birding.
