Jao Camp

Private concession, bordering the Moremi Game Reserve

Jao Camp is situated in the Jao Reserve, an area of 60000 hectares in the Okavango Delta. Built on a densely wooded, oval-shaped island, the design of Jao Camp is remarkable. Jao is the perfect destination for excellent game viewing and a sophisticated safari experience.

Jao sleeps a maximum of 18 guests in 5 spacious, unique and beautiful suites, each with its own plunge pool and 2 exclusive villas that include a plunge pool, private butler, chef, guide and vehicle. The double-height, thatched rooms have en suite facilities, including indoor and outdoor showers. In addition, each room has a 'sala', ideal for midday siestas and game-watching from the privacy of the room.

Jao's central area is split between two levels. The lower level has an intimate sitting area, a library, an excellent wine cellar and a stylish boma. Wooden walkways lead to the splash pools, each different in design and tucked away in the shade of the Okavango date palms surrounding the camp . The upper level consists of a high thatched deck with a large bar and sitting area on one side and a dining area on the other. A viewing deck furnished with comfortable chairs, loungers, and a telescope for guests to use, has superb views over the Okavango floodplains and the savannah beyond. A high walkway connects the guest rooms from the upper level, winding through the tall trees dotted around the camp. The Jao wellbeing salon offers massages and facials – both Botswana and Swedish style and a well-equipped gym is available for guests. The entertainment room is ideal for private dining, children's entertainment, watching wildlife documentaries and conducting lectures.

Activities

Jao Camp offers a wide range of safari activities – day and night game drives, walking safaris and various water activities, including mokoro and motorised boat cruises. In the summer, activities tend more toward game drives, with guests enjoying water-based activities in winter. Fishing is also offered, and Jao Camp supplies basic rods and reels. A variety of habitats on the Jao Reserve ensures diverse and exciting game viewing. The lagoons are home to hippos and crocodiles, and the permanent waterways and floodplains attract large numbers of waterfowl where guests can search for the elusive sitatunga. Jao has a raised hide about 20 minutes from camp, which can be used for sleepouts for up to 4 people, equipped with a long-drop toilet.
