jacana camp

Private Jao Concession, bordering the Moremi Game Reserve.

Jacana Camp is set on a heart-shaped island on the Jao Flats, and the density of date palms gives Jacana the feeling of a tropical island. Jacana Camp is a true water camp in the Okavango Delta that offers mokoro and walking safaris all year round; guests can hope to see elephants, lions, leopards, sitatunga, red lechwe and buffalo. The Pel's fishing owl is a favourite amongst birders, as are the greater and lesser jacanas.

Short wooden walkways access the 5 meru-style tents at Jacana Camp, each on a wooden deck overlooking the floodplains surrounding the island. The balconies have a small seating area and all the tents have en suite bathrooms which are roofless but enclosed, allowing for showers by starlight.

Jacana Camp's main area includes a large open deck looking out over a picturesque floodplain. The main lodge is a two-storey structure with a comfortable lounge and an open-sided thatched dining room on the upper deck. A small pool with sun loungers and umbrellas is perfect for lazy hot afternoons. Behind the bar is the campfire, lit every evening, where guests can relax with coffee after dinner.

Activities

Activities offered at Jacana Camp include mokoro trips, boating trips, walking safaris all year round, and game drives when the floodwaters have receded – generally between September and May. Jacana is set in one of the most densely populated wetlands for sitatunga and red lechwe. Wildlife concentrations depend on the water levels and thus change from season to season, but elephants, lions, leopards and buffalos can all be found in the Jacana area. The birdlife is abundant in the vicinity of Jacana Camp, with wattled crane, saddle-billed stork, African darter, reed cormorant, kingfishers, slaty egret, several species of heron including the goliath and rufous-bellied variety and all the more common water-bird species. Ground hornbills are also regularly spotted when water levels are low. Fishing, on a catch-and-release basis, is also offered at Jacana.

Why we like Jacana Camp

Jacana Camp offers guaranteed mokoro trips, and the camp has a fantastic, raised hide that can be used for sleepouts.
