Nxai Pan

South western section of the Nxai Pan National Park

Nxai Pan is a uniquely styled camp overlooking a waterhole on the western edge of a fossil pan from which the camp takes its name. Nxai Pan is a fossil lake-bed where the landscape is largely covered by grassland, dotted with clusters of acacia trees, with some mopane woodland in the north; however, during the rains, the pans become covered in grass and attract huge herds of antelope and predators. The camp is perfectly placed for guests wanting to visit this unique and beautiful area.

Nxai Pan is positioned in the tree line and features 9 desert rooms with en suite facilities, a 2-bedroomed family room and 8 twin rooms. The rooms are thatched with solid insulated walls to stay cool in heat and warm in the cold, essential for the fluctuating temperatures of the Kalahari. In addition, all rooms have ceiling fans, outside showers and private viewing decks with a view of the central waterhole.

The thatched main lounge area is slightly raised and connected to the rooms by wooden walkways. Tastefully decorated, guests can enjoy watching the game come to drink at the waterhole from anywhere in the central area. Who knows what guests might see while enjoying lunch or relaxing in the pool.

Activities

Activities at Nxai Pan are varied and include a unique fossil pans interpretation, game drives, guided walks, evening drives and day trips to the famous Baines' Baobabs and Pandamatenga Cattle Trail. All activities are guided and have an accompanying tracker, which allows the guide to focus on the guests more. Nxai Pan is renowned for its huge springbok population, and once the rains start, gemsbok, elephant and zebras, which come in their thousands to give birth, migrate to the region. These large herds of zebras and springboks attract lions, cheetahs, jackals, hyenas, wild dogs and leopards, while extraordinarily large herds of giraffes can be seen with up to 30 in a group. Also seen are the eland, wildebeest, gemsbok, greater kudu and red hartebeest. Resident to the pans are bat-eared foxes and raptors that prey on the rodents and reptiles. The noisy black korhaan is a hallmark of Nxai Pan, and small raptors such as kestrels and goshawks abound. Nxai Pan is in a national park and an ecologically sensitive area, so there is no driving off-road or at night.

Why we like Nxai Pan

Nxai Pan is the only lodge in this region and is located in a unique area with stunning night skies, diverse species of birds and reptiles and where guests can explore the pans and fossil sites.
